Enjoy your moments

I recently read an article about ‘the happiness formula’. Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania devised a formula for calculating happiness and found that ‘voluntary control’ had a high value. By voluntary control he meant not genetic capacity to be happy and not circumstance. This proved for him that people can learn to be happier and that wealth & health plays a less important role in happiness than might have been perceived.

He found that factors such as learning to be grateful for what we have and sitting down in the evenings listing all the things which went well with the day led to people achieving greater happiness.

I love articles like this as they provide a scientific base for what I do everyday and what results myself and my students get from meditation.

Yes being grateful can lead to greater happiness. Being grateful proves that you are looking positively at life. You are enjoying the flowers, the smiles, nature. If you can value your day and be grateful for what has gone on and what is around you; this in turn increases the likelihood of more things coming into your life, for which to be grateful for.

A really good way to bring a little gratitude into your life and therefore happiness is to write three things daily for which you were grateful for that day – it can be the simplest thing or a major achievement. This will help you to live in the moment, bring happiness to your everyday and generally live a little lighter and with more fun:)

What are you grateful for today? I am grateful for the wonderful blue of the sea, which I can look out at; my kitchen which I lovingly finished cleaning earlier today and my tea break which I’ll take after this is posted.

I hope you can find your three things to be grateful for too! Please post them and enjoy your moments!

Celebrate Your Goals :)

In CategoryRealising your dreams, positive thinking
ByBindi

I am sure most of you have seen some coverage of the World Cup – I have definitely been enjoying watching the games :)

It is interesting seeing the ways the football teams celebrate their goals and I thought I would remind everyone to be sharing their goals and successes too!

It is extremely easy to get caught up in your everyday and not take the time out to:

1. Realise what you have achieved and

2. To celebrate these achievements.

It is important to do both and often. You are achieving more than you realise. Think through your last week and write down everything you have accomplished.

In personal terms, this could be the new recipe you tried which was a success; a new exercise regime you embarked on or quality time you spent with your partner or children.

In business terms, it could be the new blog site you created; the new client you gained or the follow-up calls you managed to make.

You are constantly achieving without necessarily taking the time to appreciate these achievements. Once you do know what your achievements are for the week, then start celebrating them! This could be by celebrating your business achievements on a Friday night with a glass of wine, or celebrating personal success with a family day out.  Remember to celebrate all your smaller steps towards your ultimate vision or dream and see it draw closer into your life.

So take some time out to see what you have achieved and I look forward to your ‘celebration stories’.

Welcome to Spring!

The weather here has definitely warmed up, the days are longer and there is a spring in people’s steps.
It is truly wonderful being by the sea in this season.

Welcome to all my new subscribers whom I met at the ‘Spirit of the Millenium’ show in Hove last Sunday. It was wonderful meeting you all and I hope you had as an enjoyable day as I did.

The last month has been one of immense growth for me. The results my students have had from the meditation classes and workshops have amazed them – I’m pleased that so many people have embraced meditation and it is wonderful what a difference it is making to their lives. That is what my ‘live the life you dream of..’ programme is all about. It doesn’t have to be the big dreams which make a difference to your life…the everyday lessening of chatter and worry can be all the change you need to really make a difference to your life and so starting living the life you dream of… which may in essence be the same life but simpler!

With simpler in mind, please do check my blog out for making your e-mail life easier. A lot of us are tending to become more and more inundated with e-mails as technology progresses and more of our networks start being online. I have written seven ways to make e-mails easier so do take a look at the blog and add your comments: http://anamaya.net/Blog/?p=261

Thank you to all of you for spreading the word about the LIFEstival, the health and well-being show in Saltdean 1-2 May 2010, I look forward to seeing you there and if you’d like one of the stands please get in touch. 50% of all our proceeds will be to the Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice, who provide much-needed care and support for families when a child develops a life-limiting illness. For more information see the website www.lifestivaluk.com.

I thought I’d end on a meditation to truly still the mind as that has been the focus in the last month.

Take a few moments to get comfortable, so roll your shoulders back and relax your arms. Then when you’re ready start observing your breath. You don’t need to take deep or long breaths, but just observe and be aware of the way you are breathing. Is your breath hurried? Is it regular? Is this the first time you have ever thought ot your breath? As you start becoming more aware of your breathing, relax and let go of any tension you have. Gradually start taking deeper breaths and then slower breaths, especially on the exhalations. Keep all your focus on the breath, letting other thoughts go. Keep with this breathing meditation until your mind feels calmer and more at ease.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone and enjoy the March sunshine :)

Is it possible to add time to your day?

In CategoryAchieving Dreams, Meditation, Meditation Courses, Realising your dreams, positive thinking

I read an interesting chapter in one of my meditation books this morning about time and I thought I would summarise it for you.

Sir Isaac Newton set up the view of time as an absolute thing. A second was a second, no longer, no shorter.

Einstein presented the theory of relativity. He said that to measure time you need clocks and all clocks move, so therefore time is dependent on movement.

Newton’s theory is that time is passing by, independent of whatever is happening; whereas Einstein said that time is a measure of our activities.

This can help us all in practical terms. If we take a Newtonian view and see time as rigid, then we become time’s servant and rush around doing as many activities as we possibly can to cram into every minute.

If we take on Einstein’s view and see time as elastic, then speed is going to govern how fast time seems to be moving. If I slow my thoughts down, time will appear to expand. If I speed up my thoughts, time contracts. By simply leaving a space between thoughts, you can be aware of your thoughts and of the free spaces. As soon as you are aware of these peaceful spaces then you feel as though you have time to spare.

Newtonian time is the time which governs the physical world around us, but through Einstein’s view we can experience a timeless expanse.

The information is taken from a chapter in Practical Meditation by Brahma Kumaris and I hope you can also appreciate this notion of time and try to use it a little today to add some extra space and time to your day.

With love,

Thoughts on a quote

In CategoryGeneral, Realising your dreams, positive thinking
ByBindi

‘To change skins, evolve into new cycles, I feel one has to learn to discard. If one changes internally, one should not continue to live with the same objects. They reflect one’s mind and psyche of yesterday. I throw away what has no dynamic, living use.’ Anais Nin, novelist.

I read this quote and thought this is not something we immediately think of. We change ourselves internally all the time via growth by reading, becoming more aware via meditation and the studies we embark on. But when changing ourselves internally, do we ever think of our external environment and whether there are changes to be made which could benefit us? Or do we just live with the same belongings, eat the same food and wear the same clothes? We are constantly evolving and it is only necessary that our external world as well as our internal world should be evolving too. If we cannot discard and let things go, then our growth internally can also not flourish as well as it could have if we had also looked at our physical environment and made some changes.

I hope this quote has also made you think. I would love to hear some comments.

Life is precious

ByBindi

I hope everyone is having a good start to the week.

Last week was a bit turbulent for me as my aunt passed away and it made me think of life and how we must all make the most of it. We never know how long or how short our life may be, but if we make each moment count and each moment precious it will be the best it can be. So I’d like to highlight a few points on how to make each moment count :)

1. Love what you do. Whether you are doing your dream job or in the processs of taking steps to do it, love it. If you are a full time mother and housewife, love that you make your home happy for your family and can care for them. If you are the breadwinner, love that you can provide for your family so that they get the best they can.

2.  Don’t think of your value as your job title, but what you are giving to the world. Does your job title really matter? Think of the value you are giving to others and what enjoyment they have from being in your presence. These are the things which people like about others and remember; people rarely remember a job title.

3. Tell your loved ones often that you love them and what they mean to you. Bring more love into your life and into others by being open and generous with your love. This means telling your partner often that you love them and telling your children and family.

These are three short, quick ways of making your moments more precious. Go out and enjoy today, meet a friend or have a relaxing bath. Do something you love.

Please do feel free to add your own ways of making life precious in the comments and I hope to connect with you soon,
